Sukkah Austin

Inspired by Sukkah City NYC, the Austin Jewish Community Center hosted an open design competition for an outdoor temporary wood structure to be placed in a silent auction benefiting Austin Children’s Shelter.

Sukkah Solar + Lunar created a temporary architecture where one may embrace the passing of time through their connection to the sun and moon.  Basic elements from the two polarities of day and night were threaded within the shelter’s outer enclosure and expressed in the structural framework. These forces of yin and yang were articulated through shade and exposure, harshness and softness, opacity and transparency. Day and night come together and make a unified balanced spatial experience, referencing the influence of the heavens and the tellurian elements.
